  • About Essentially Yours | Clean Skincare in Hudson Valley

Discover the story behind Essentially Yours, a Hudson Valley–based small-batch skincare brand rooted in clean ingredients, customization, and thoughtful formulation. Natural, Small-Batch Skincare Made to Be Essentially Yours Welcome to Essentially Yours, a Hudson Valley–based small business dedicated to creating carefully crafted natural skincare and pet care products. What began as a personal search for simple, plant-based products has grown into a presence at local farmers markets and community gatherings — and into a brand built on ingredient quality, thoughtful formulation, and meaningful connection. Customization remains central to our approach. Many of our products can be tailored to individual preferences, including essential oil selections, fragrance-free options, or ingredient adjustments for specific sensitivities. Our goal is to offer flexible options so your skincare routine can reflect your needs and lifestyle. Each small batch is prepared with close attention to freshness, consistency, and integrity. By maintaining a small-scale, hands-on process, we are able to provide clean products that feel personal while remaining accessible and responsibly made. Our Mission We are committed to using high-quality, naturally derived ingredients selected for their skin compatibility and overall sensory experience. Each formulation is designed to offer a refined, balanced feel while maintaining a responsible and transparent approach to ingredient selection. Our mission is to produce clean, small-batch skincare that emphasizes ingredient integrity, customization, and clear communication. We formulate with thoughtfully chosen natural butters and waxes, plant-based oils and extracts, and essential oils, alongside fragrance-free options for individuals with sensitivities. Every product is developed with care to support the appearance and feel of healthy skin while providing accessible, customizable options without compromising quality or formulation standards. Our Philosophy At Essentially Yours, our approach is guided by a commitment to ingredient integrity, thoughtful formulation, and informed choice. We believe skincare and pet care products should be developed with transparency, using naturally derived ingredients selected for quality, compatibility, and purpose. We value simplicity and clarity in formulation. That is why our products are made without synthetic dyes and are crafted with naturally derived ingredients, incorporating organic options whenever feasible and available. We prioritize essential oils for aroma where appropriate and provide fragrance oil or fragrance-free options upon request to help accommodate individual preferences and sensitivities. We believe personal care is not one-size-fits-all. Customization, when possible within our formulation and safety parameters, allows customers to select options that align with their needs while maintaining product consistency and quality standards. By producing in small batches, we support careful oversight, freshness, and responsible production practices. Our philosophy centers on creating accessible, customizable products rooted in transparency, quality, and respect for both people and the ingredients we use. Meet the Owner & Formulator My name is Toni Lynne, and I am the owner of Essentially Yours. As a native resident of New York’s Hudson Valley, I’ve always felt a strong connection to nature and an appreciation for practical, health-conscious living. That perspective became the foundation of my business. I earned an AAS in Radiologic Technology from Hudson Valley Community College in 1995 and spent ten years working in medical imaging (X-ray, Mammography, MRI, and CT) before my new endeavor. That experience reinforced the importance of precision, safety standards, effective communication, and attention to detail — principles that continue to guide my business today. In 2005, I began developing natural bath and body products for personal use after researching commonly used ingredients in commercial products and seeking less toxic alternatives. What began as careful study and small-scale experimentation gradually expanded to creating products for family and friends. In 2011, I formally established Essentially Yours as a business. Today, Essentially Yours offers a growing collection of dozens of products, shaped in large part by conversations at markets and feedback from the community I serve. Many new additions begin as customer questions or special requests. When developing something new or customized, I take a careful, methodical approach to ensure each formula remains consistent, well-balanced, and aligned with my established standards. Essentially Yours continues to operate as a woman-owned, small-batch business rooted in ingredient integrity, clear communication, and intentional formulation. Every product is prepared with attention and care, combining thoughtfully selected ingredients with practical, everyday usability. Our Commitment We are committed to using thoughtfully selected ingredients chosen for their quality, compatibility, and role within each formulation. Our products are built around plant-based ingredients, essential oils incorporated with care, and fragrance-free options for individuals with sensitivities. We avoid synthetic dyes and unnecessary additives, focusing instead on purposeful ingredients developed in small batches with attention to consistency and formulation standards. To learn more about the ingredients we use and the principles that guide our formulation process, visit our Ingredient & Essential Oil Safety Guide for for additional details. Our Practices At Essentially Yours, we’re committed to crafting skincare and pet care products responsibly. Every item is made in small batches when ordered, using locally and fair trade sourced ingredients whenever possible. Our refill program, on-demand labels, and reused packaging help reduce waste while keeping your products fresh and high quality. To learn more, visit our Sustainability Practices page.

My AmStaff Terrier had some patches of fur missing due to allergies.. the salve works like a charm. She LOVES the smell and sits like a perfect lady when it's time to put it on (also softens up her once insanely dry paw pads), her fur is back and she is now on a grain-free diet as well! Thanks." Shirley & Molly, Hudson, NY ★★★★★ " The foot cream is one of my favorites. My feet were rough and calloused and since I started the foot cream, my feet are velvety soft, and I'm not ashamed to wear sandals anymore. I have my family members using it and they all love it. I recommend the eucalyptus and peppermint scent. It smells so clean, and the fragrance is not overpowering. I use the foot cream on my hands, legs, knees, elbows wherever the skin is rough." — Denise, Rosendale, NY ★★★★★ "I was at a flea market in Rhinebeck last year, and while killing some time waiting for my husband I stumbled on your booth. Not knowing what to expect I purchased small. So sorry I did because I ran out and NEEDED more! I bought the tiny jar of eye cream. I have since ordered more in the larger jar, and this year when we go I will be sure to stop by. Thanks for making the car show fun for women." • Ingredient & Essential Oil Safety Guide | Essentially Yours NY

Learn about our ingredient standards & transparency, essential oil safety & dilution guidance, pet precautions, and medical disclaimers at Essentially Yours NY. Ingredient & Essential Oil Safety Guide At Essentially Yours, we believe informed choices create confident experiences. This guide is designed to help you better understand our ingredient standards, the nature of essential oils and fragrance oils, and important safety considerations — especially when creating custom blends from our available scent selections. We proudly offer both pre-made formulations and customizable scent options. While personalization is encouraged, aromatic ingredients are highly concentrated and require thoughtful, informed use. Customers selecting custom scent combinations are encouraged to review ingredient information and consider individual sensitivities, medical conditions, and household environments. Natural does not mean risk-free — it means informed and responsible use. Our Ingredient Standards We prioritize high-quality, responsibly sourced ingredients selected for both performance and skin compatibility. Our formulation standards include: Plant-based ingredients whenever possible Vegan formulations whenever possible Organic ingredients whenever possible Non-toxic formulation philosophy No unnecessary fillers or harsh additives Small-batch production for quality control Thoughtful preservation methods Clear labeling and ingredient transparency Each ingredient is selected with purpose — not trend. Explore our guide to commonly misunderstood skincare ingredients and their safe, regulated use. Understanding Essential Oils Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. A single drop can represent a significant amount of plant material, which is why proper dilution and mindful application are essential. Our pre-made blends are formulated at approximately a 5% dilution rate, intended for balanced aromatic strength and responsible topical use for most healthy adults. Lower dilution levels are generally recommended for children, elderly individuals, sensitive skin types, and certain health conditions. Custom blends may vary in dilution depending on the selected oils and intended use. Because of this, thoughtful selection and awareness are important when choosing scent combinations. Because of their potency: Essential oils should not be applied undiluted to the skin Proper dilution supports safer topical use Sensitivity can vary based on age, health status, and environment Individual tolerance should always be considered When used properly, essential oils can be supportive. When misused, they may cause irritation or sensitization. Respecting potency is key. Fragrance Oils & Transparency Our pre-made blends are formulated primarily with essential oils, while fragrance oils may be incorporated upon customer request to achieve specific scent profiles that cannot be created through essential oils alone. Fragrance oils are blended aromatic compounds formulated to provide consistent, stable scent performance. Unlike essential oils, which are naturally derived plant extracts, fragrance oils may contain a combination of natural and synthetic aroma components designed for longevity and scent accuracy. Phthalate-free fragrance oils are separated and clearly labeled on our scent selection page. Customers are encouraged to review scent descriptions and ingredient information carefully when creating custom blends. Because fragrance oils differ from essential oils in composition, individuals with fragrance sensitivities, allergies, or certain health conditions should review ingredients before selecting a scent combination. We are committed to clear labeling, ingredient transparency, and informed customer choice. Safe Usage & Dilution Awareness Essential oils and fragrance compounds should always be used with awareness and personal responsibility, especially when selecting custom blends. For topical application: Perform a patch test before full use Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes Do not apply to broken or compromised skin Be cautious with sun-exposed areas, as some oils may increase photosensitivity Store products away from heat and direct sunlight Additional caution is advised if you are: Pregnant or nursing Using essential oils on children Taking prescription medications Managing chronic health conditions Living with autoimmune disorders Sensitive to fragrances Managing asthma or respiratory conditions Prone to eczema, rosacea, or reactive skin Managing hormone-sensitive conditions Certain essential oils or fragrance components may not be appropriate in these circumstances. Consultation with a qualified healthcare professional is recommended if you are unsure. Natural products still require informed use. For reference, please review our Essential Oils Contraindications Chart below, which highlights commonly noted conditions and medications. This chart is provided for general educational reference and is not a comprehensive medical guide. Pet Safety Considerations Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, and while they may offer benefits for humans, they can pose risks to pets. Cats and dogs process these substances differently than people, which can increase their risk of toxicity. When using essential oil or fragrance-based products in homes with pets: Avoid direct topical application unless formulated specifically for pets Use diffusion sparingly and in well-ventilated spaces Allow animals to leave the room freely Never force exposure Observe for behavioral or respiratory changes Consult a veterinarian familiar with essential oil safety when uncertain The following points outline important, research-based safety considerations for pet owners. Cats cannot break down certain chemicals in essential oils very well, which makes them more likely to get sick from exposure. Tea tree oil can be toxic to both cats and dogs, especially if it is used undiluted or in high amounts. Strong oils like oregano, thyme, and clove are especially risky for cats because their bodies have a harder time processing them. Pure essential oils are much stronger than hydrosols (floral waters) and therefore carry a higher risk of causing harm. Breathing in essential oil vapors can irritate a pet’s lungs, especially in pets that already have breathing problems. Oils can soak into a pet’s skin, and since cats groom themselves often, they may swallow the oil while licking their fur (We do not advise using essential oils at all on cats). Smaller pets are at greater risk because even a small amount of oil can affect them more strongly due to their size. * Signs of essential oil poisoning can include drooling, vomiting, stumbling, shaking, extreme tiredness, or trouble breathing. Ongoing exposure, even in small amounts, can build up over time, especially in cats. Kittens under 8–10 weeks old are at especially high risk, because their liver and detox systems are not fully developed, making essential oil exposure more dangerous. Puppies under 8 weeks old are more vulnerable to essential oils, since their organs are still developing and their small body size increases the risk of toxicity. It’s safest to talk to a veterinarian before using essential oils around pets, especially if your pet is young, older, pregnant, or has health issues. * Cats, birds, and small animals may be particularly sensitive to certain compounds, and we do not recommend the use of essential oil or fragrance products directly on these animals. When in doubt, less is more. Product Separation & Natural Variation Because we do not use synthetic stabilizers or chemical emulsifiers solely for visual uniformity, you may notice that certain products naturally separate or layer over time. This is normal and does not affect product quality or performance. If separation occurs, simply shake the product gently to re-blend before use. Natural formulations may also vary slightly in color, texture, or aroma from batch to batch due to seasonal and botanical differences. These variations are a natural characteristic of small-batch production. Transparency & Responsibility The information provided on this page is for educational purposes only. We do not claim therapeutic benefits from our products, and no statements made by Essentially Yours are intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition. The use of essential oils and fragrance oils in our products is intended for aromatic and cosmetic purposes only. Statements pertaining to our products have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Our products are not intended to replace the advice of a qualified healthcare professional or your own research. Customers are responsible for reviewing ingredient information and making informed choices based on personal health considerations. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medication, managing a medical condition, or have concerns about your physical or mental well-being, please consult your physician or healthcare provider prior to use. Individual responses may vary. If irritation or adverse reaction occurs, discontinue use immediately. By offering both pre-made and customizable scent options, we aim to empower customers with choice — supported by education and awareness. We believe informed customers make confident decisions. Have Questions? Have questions about ingredients, dilution, or which option may be best for your needs? We welcome you to contact us directly for guidance in choosing a scent or formulation that aligns with your preferences, sensitivities, and lifestyle.

  • Commonly Misunderstood Skincare Ingredie | Essentially Yours NY

Commonly Misunderstood Skincare Ingredients Many cosmetic ingredients carry complex, scientific names that can sound unfamiliar or concerning at first glance. In reality, these names often reflect standardized labeling requirements rather than risk. Below is a closer look at commonly misunderstood ingredients, their purpose, and how they are used in modern formulations. 🧪 Tocopheryl Acetate Sounds concerning because: The name appears highly technical What it is: A stable form of Vitamin E Why it’s used: Functions as an antioxidant to help protect the skin from oxidative stress Safety considerations: Widely regarded as safe when used within established cosmetic concentrations 🧪 Ascorbyl Palmitate Sounds concerning because: Complex, unfamiliar terminology What it is: A fat-soluble form of Vitamin C Why it’s used: Supports antioxidant activity and helps promote a brighter-looking complexion Safety considerations: Considered safe at typical cosmetic use levels 🧪 Sodium Hyaluronate Sounds concerning because: The presence of “sodium” and chemical suffix What it is: The salt form of hyaluronic acid Why it’s used: Supports hydration and helps retain moisture in the skin Safety considerations: Naturally occurring in the body with a low likelihood of irritation for most users 🧪 Butylene Glycol Sounds concerning because: Association with the term “glycol” What it is: A humectant and solvent Why it’s used: Helps improve product texture and enhances absorption Safety considerations: Considered safe in cosmetic formulations at regulated concentrations 🧪 Caprylyl Glycol Sounds concerning because: Length and structure of the name What it is: A moisturizing agent that also supports preservation systems Why it’s used: Helps maintain product stability and skin feel Safety considerations: Evaluated as safe for use in cosmetics by expert review panels 🧪 Disodium EDTA Sounds concerning because: Highly technical chemical name What it is: A chelating agent Why it’s used: Helps prevent trace metals from destabilizing formulations Safety considerations: Minimal skin absorption; considered safe within cosmetic use parameters 🧪 Cetearyl Alcohol Sounds concerning because: The word “alcohol” What it is: A fatty alcohol (distinct from drying alcohols like ethanol) Why it’s used: Acts as an emollient and thickening agent to improve texture Safety considerations: Non-drying and widely considered appropriate for cosmetic use Why Do Ingredient Names Sound So Complex? Cosmetic ingredients are labeled using INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) — a standardized system designed to ensure consistency and transparency across the industry. This means: Natural ingredients may still appear under scientific names The term “chemical” does not indicate whether an ingredient is synthetic or harmful All substances, including water, are chemicals Example: Water is listed as Aqua on ingredient labels. Many cosmetic ingredients fall into a hybrid category: • Naturally sourced but chemically modified • Plant-derived but lab-purified • Bio-fermented but stabilized Modern cosmetic science often improves: ✔ Stability ✔ Consistency ✔ Allergen control ✔ Shelf life ✔ Safety margins How to Evaluate Skincare Ingredients Thoughtfully Instead of asking: ❌ “Is it a chemical?” Consider asking: ✔ Is the ingredient regulated for cosmetic use? ✔ At what concentration is it used? ✔ What do available toxicology and safety assessments indicate? ✔ Is there credible human data suggesting risk at typical use levels? A Balanced Perspective Many ingredients that sound intimidating are widely used because they have been evaluated within the context of dose, formulation, and regulatory standards. Understanding these factors allows for more informed, confident product choices. 📊 Comprehensive Skincare Ingredient Education Chart ⚠️ Disclaimer This content is provided for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical, legal, or regulatory advice. Ingredient safety depends on formulation, concentration, frequency of use, and individual sensitivity. Always review product labeling and consult a qualified professional for personal concerns. While this guide includes a range of commonly used cosmetic ingredients for educational context, we do not formulate with many of these ingredients in our products. Our formulations are intentionally focused on plant-based and plant-derived (hybrid) ingredients, selected for their compatibility with small-batch skincare and our formulation philosophy. This information is not intended to suggest that all listed ingredients are used in our products, nor to imply that ingredient categories alone determine product safety or suitability.

  • Sustainability Practices | Hudson Valley Skincare & Pet Care | Essentially Yours NY

Learn how Essentially Yours crafts small-batch skincare and pet care responsibly. Made-to-order products, refill programs, locally and fair trade sourced ingredients, and low-waste practices support mindful consumption in Columbia County, NY. Sustainability Practices Our business is built on a deliberate, low-waste production model designed to minimize environmental impact while maintaining product quality and freshness. Every product is made in small batches and upon customer order. This approach significantly reduces excess production, limits the risk of product expiration, and ensures that raw materials are used efficiently. By avoiding bulk pre-manufacturing, we are able to conserve resources and maintain tighter control over ingredient usage. We intentionally do not hold large volumes of finished inventory. Instead, we stock only essential raw ingredients, which helps reduce storage demands, prevent spoilage, and lower overall waste generation. This streamlined inventory system supports both environmental responsibility and operational efficiency. To further reduce waste, we have implemented a refill incentive program. Customers are encouraged to return their empty containers, and in exchange, they receive a discount on their refill purchases. This practice promotes reuse, reduces single-use packaging, and supports a circular product lifecycle. Shipping practices are also approached with sustainability in mind. Whenever possible, we reuse clean, structurally sound shipping boxes and packing materials. This reduces the demand for new packaging supplies and diverts usable materials from the waste stream. Each shipment is prepared with care to balance product protection and minimal material usage. We take this one step further by offering local pickup! Labeling is handled on demand, meaning labels are printed only as needed for each individual order. This eliminates excess printed materials, reduces paper and ink waste, and ensures that labeling remains accurate and up to date. Ingredient sourcing is another key component of our sustainability commitment. We prioritize purchasing from local suppliers whenever feasible, which helps reduce transportation-related emissions and supports local economies. For ingredients that cannot be sourced locally, we make a conscious effort to select fair trade options, aligning our purchasing decisions with ethical labor and environmental standards. Overall, our sustainability practices reflect a commitment to responsible production, waste reduction, and mindful sourcing. These measures are continually evaluated to ensure alignment with evolving environmental standards and best practices.
